R2R Ultra: The Ultimate Evolution of R2R Decoding

The DX270 represents a full redesign of R2R implementation by iBasso.

This design adopts a hybrid 20-bit R2R + 4-bit string DAC architecture, combined with an 8-channel, fully differential discrete R2R design. This is further supported by FPGA-Master 3.0, in-house developed decoding algorithms, and a hardware resistor compensation network.

Together, these elements achieve an exceptional 130dB dynamic range and THD+N better than −97dB, effectively overcoming common R2R challenges such as zero-crossing distortion, resulting in near perfect linearity.

8-Channel, Fully Differential R2R

The DX270 employs a fully balanced signal architecture with L+, L−, R+, and R− channels. Each channel is internally driven by dual R2R DACs, forming an 8-channel, fully differential discrete R2R configuration.

This differential design is critical in addressing zero-crossing distortion, which occurs when audio signals transition between positive and negative voltage. In conventional single-channel decoding, this transition can introduce signal discontinuities.

By using dual DACs per channel and differential output, the DX270 compensates for these discontinuities, ensuring smoother transitions and stable linearity even at very low signal levels.

This architecture not only resolves zero-crossing distortion, but also enables an industry-leading 130dB dynamic range, allowing the R2R decoding system to fully preserve the dynamic range of the source material.

20-bit R2R + 4-bit String DAC

The DX270 employs a hybrid 20-bit R2R + 4-bit string DAC architecture designed to optimize both linearity and dynamic range.

For high-bit (MSB) processing, a string DAC is used to directly approximate the target voltage through a series of precision resistors and switches. This approach provides wide dynamic range, low spurious noise, and excellent THD+N performance.

To fully realize this design, the DX270 incorporates 344 high-precision resistors, nearly doubling the resistor count compared to conventional R2R DAC implementations. This higher component density allows for finer voltage steps and improved accuracy.

FPGA-Master 3.0 In-house Developed Algorithms

The DX270 is powered by FPGA-Master 3.0, developed in-house by iBasso and refined over years of algorithm design. Compared to FPGA-Master 2.0, this new platform uses 7.5 times more logic LUTs, providing substantially higher processing capability.

As the primary audio control core, FPGA-Master 3.0 retrieves data directly from the SoC using synchronized system clocks, working in conjunction with two ultra-low-noise Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators to ensure precise timing and low jitter.

FPGA-Master 3.0 also functions as a hardware calibration controller, continuously monitoring and compensating for component parameter variations in real time. This reduces non-linear behavior within the circuit and improves the accuracy of the hardware resistor compensation network.

FPGA-Master 3.0 enables support for NOS mode as well as four selectable digital filters, allowing users to tailor transient behavior and frequency response to personal preference and offering flexibility across listening styles and source material.

Hardware Resistor Compensation Network

The DX270 combines FPGA-based algorithms with a dedicated hardware resistor compensation network to further improve decoding accuracy and linearity.

This compensation network uses 76 ultra-high-precision resistors operating together to correct resistor deviations in real time. By continuously compensating for component tolerances, decoding accuracy is significantly improved, dynamic range is expanded, and distortion is further reduced.

This deep integration of software algorithms and hardware correction allows the R2R Ultra DAC architecture to exceed the limitations of traditional R2R implementations. As a result, the equivalent resistance accuracy reaches 1.4 parts per 100,000, enabling more stable, precise, and consistent signal conversion.

High-Performance Hardware and Audio-Focused Software

The DX270 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 high-speed internal storage, ensuring smooth system operation and responsive performance.

The DX270 can be connected to a 12V DC external power supply, which increases the amplifier power rail from ±8V to ±12V, enabling Super Gain Mode.

In this configuration, output power reaches up to 1575mW + 1575mW @ 32Ω, providing significantly greater headroom and control. This enhanced power delivery allows the DX270 to drive a wide range of headphones with authority, while maintaining stability across complex musical passages.

The DX270 runs Android 13 with a refined user interface and support for a wide range of streaming applications. System-level SRC bypass ensures that compatible applications, including Mango Player, operate without unnecessary resampling.

In addition, the DX270 includes Mango OS, a Linux-based operating system dedicated exclusively to music playback. By minimizing system load and disabling non-essential functions such as WiFi and Bluetooth, Mango OS reduces interference and EMI.
