The R8 II is tuned in keeping with the “Portable Concert Hall” ethos of the original R8, taken one step further. Filling out the large soundstage projected by the series with new levels of detail and density, the R8 II brings the openness and power of an orchestral performance into a portable listening environment — made possible by the all-new Darwin-MPA architecture.

Darwin-MPA

The R8 II features a multiphase PWM array, 16-way current-mode DAC. The Darwin-MPA (Multiphase PWM Array) continues the flexible design of Darwin-R2R, carrying over many of its distinctive features. To work with the internal delta-sigma modulators, input signals are oversampled to 128x through the Darwin v2 filter system, which can also emulate non-oversampling DAC functionality via three NOS filters or follow a hybrid approach through the Darwin Ultra filter. The oversampling and filtering follow a cascaded FIR design with a precise 1024-tap opening stage.

The output stage incorporates 16 channels of current-mode D/A conversion with I/V conversion amplification and MHz-level lowpass filtering, achieving an exquisitely open sound of extraordinary bandwidth. This architecture delivers desktop-grade sonic performance at portable power consumption.

High-End Ultrasuede Backplate with Premium Texture

The R8 II features a luxurious Ultrasuede backplate for refined texture and comfort. Lightweight, soft, and durable, the material enhances the device’s ergonomics by improving grip, temperature control, and comfort for extended use.
